1004 Estate: Residents may reject alternative arrangement

Residents of the 1004 Estate on Victoria Island on Thursday said the relocation being carried out by the Presidential Implementation Committee on the sale of Federal Government Properties in Lagos may be rejected if the exercise is not properly carried out.

Residents of the 1004 Estate on Victoria Island on Thursday said the relocation being carried out by the Presidential Implementation Committee on the sale of Federal Government Properties in Lagos may be rejected if the exercise is not properly carried out.

Chairman of the residents' association, Mr. Abdul Kohol, told our correspondent in an interview that the residents could still reject the arrangement if they were not satisfied with places given to them.

Our correspondent had reported that the residents were being given letters of relocation to Federal Housing Authorities estates in FESTAC Town, Satellite Town, Abesan, and Ipaja, among others.

Kohol said the residents decided to stay action on the legal option because they wanted to give the committee the chance to carry out their assignment.

He said his members had the right to accept or reject whatever place they were being relocated and assured them that the association would do everything possible to defend their interest.

Kohol maintained that the association might go back to court or renew its interest in buying the estate as a group if it was discovered that the committee was trying to play a fast one on them.

The chairman said the figure of the residents so far cleared for relocation as legal occupants had increased to 629, adding that more could still be cleared if they could defend their legal status in the estate.

He said the association could reject the present arrangement if residents who had been given letters of introduction to their new homes came back to condemn the places.

It would be recalled that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, last week, started distributing letters of relocation to legal occupants of the estate.
